Design of cropping systems and identification of deep rooted species


Increase our understanding of how deep rooting can be achieved, and to identify deep rooted species and cropping systems with significant root activity between 2 and 4m.

In order to understand and improve deep rooting, we will study plant species and species combinations with a main focus on finding deep rooted alternatives. The goal will not just be to find deeper maximum rooting depth, but also solutions allowing deep root activity during longer time. The studies will rely on the crops growing within the DeepRootLab, as well as on separate experiments made at other locations using the mobile facility, all studying the root growth to 4-5m depth.
